Green Building Design

Creating a more sustainable future

If your goal is to minimise environmental impact, PPG offers a range products that meet the most stringent environmental standards while delivering the performance you’ve come to expect.

From bio-based paints that actively improve indoor air quality, to low VOC durable solutions to extend maintenance cycles, a growing number of products are also supported by third-party green certifications – contribute to achieving credits in the major green building standards including LEED® & BREEAM®.

BREEAM®

BREEAM® is the longest standing and most widely used environmental assessment method for UK buildings, in which credits are awarded according to performance across 10 sustainability categories.

Awarded on a building-wide basis, credits are calculated from the percentage of available points that have been achieved within each category. Through its application and use BREEAM helps clients measure and reduce the environmental impacts of their buildings and in doing so create higher value, lower risk assets.

Earn BREEAM points with Paint

To assist with optimising project sustainability performance, paint can contribute to a number of BREEAM categories including:

Health & Wellbeing – Indoor Air Quality (HEA 02)

The intent of HEA 02 is to encourage and support healthy internal environments with good indoor air quality, through reducing pollution sources and concentrations of chemical contaminants that can damage air quality, human health, productivity, and the environment.
This requires that our paints meet both VOC content (Total Volatile Organic Compounds – TVOC) and certified emissions requirements. We offer a complete range of low VOC solutions, with supporting declarations & certifications for BREEAM.

Materials – Responsible Sourcing of construction products (MAT 02)

The MAT section encourages the use of products for which life-cycle information is available. A growing range of PPG & Johnstone’s Trade products have third party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) which are Product Specific Type III EPDs conforming to ISO 14025.

Waste – Construction waste management (WST 01)

WST 01 requires practices to reduce construction waste by encouraging reuse, recovery and best practice waste management practices to minimise waste going to landfill.

Build Green & Improve Indoor Air Quality

If your goal is to “build green”, be it through meeting VOC regulations, qualifying for BREEAM or LEED® credits, or consciously attempting to minimize the overall environmental footprint of your building, PPG can help.

We offer products that meet the most stringent environmental standards which require either zero or low VOC* coatings while delivering the performance you’ve come to expect.

Low VOC and Water Based paints

Low VOC paints and coatings have reduced amounts of volatile organic compounds, meaning they don’t release as much VOC as traditional paints.

We offer a comprehensive range of low VOC, water based paints covering all categories – wall & ceiling emulsion paints, trim paints, floor coatings through to intumescent coatings.

Considering VOC Emissions

Low emission paints are better for health and the environment.

BREEAM, LEED and WELL set limits for the concentration of VOC emissions and formaldehyde – this goes beyond VOC content contained within the can, focusing on the emissions released from the paint once dry.

As of 2018, the BREEAM New Construction manual considers an Indoor Air Quality Plan a pre-requisite that must be completed at RIBA Stage 2, encouraging architects to consider air pollution early in the design process and put a mitigation strategy in place, to reduce VOC content & emissions.

One of the most widely used classifications for building material emissions assessment is the Indoor Air Comfort Test from Eurofins. PPG are proud to have a growing number of products which meet the VOC Emissions requirements for Indoor Air Comfort GOLD & Exemplary level.
